PLAINS STYLE INDIAN SHIELD IN PATRIOTIC SYMBOLISM -- ONE-OF-A-KIND. This incredible native American shield was recently created by Plains Style Indian Art creator Gary Russell at Tonweya Lodge. Every art piece this Indian creates is unique and made from a vision quest, i.e. after receiving a dream about it. This protective medicine shield is filled with artistic inclination and symbolic flair. The shield is made from elk rawhide stretched over a strip of soaked willow to form the hoop, which are laced together with sinew, Plainsmens early thread {a tendon from the back of a deer’s leg}. We just love this Stars and Stripes shield. The black and white Eagle is in front of the sun. The Eagle’s central tail feather is adorned with a painted decoration, perhaps meant to be gold ringed ornamentation. Seven gold stars represent the seven directions: four which are wind directions {North, South, East, West}, the other three personify the sky, earth, and inner earth. The macaw wing and covert feathers are from this Seller’s own birds. Their quills are wrapped with beautiful white deerskin leather with beeswaxed and dyed red sinew tightly holding them together. Spit-twisted white leather strips gently fall next to the feathers. The top of of this twisted leather is adorned by blue trade beads. The red threads, white deerskin wraps and blue beads compliment the shield’s hand painted red, white and blue design. The feathers themselves are red, blue and yellow {wing feathers are naturally blue on their top, yellow on their undersides}. These colors exemplify the four directions: BLUE is West: WHITE is South: YELLOW is East: RED is North. Two narrow strips of red decorative tradecloth dangle from the bottom of the shield. The upper half of the shield is covered with a red and blue tradecloth strip. The shield measures 8” in diameter and top to bottom is 16”. There is a leather strap on the back for easy hanging.
