SOUTHERN PLAINS STYLE INDIAN SHIELD W/BUFFALO TOOTH & HAIR - ONE-OF-A-KIND. This incredible native American shield was recently created by Plains Style Indian Art creator Gary Russell at Tonweya Lodge. Every art piece this Indian creates is unique and made from a vision quest, i.e after receiving a dream about it. This protective medicine shield is filled with artistic inclination and symbolic flair. The shield is made from elk rawhide stretched over a strip of soaked willow to form a hoop, which are laced together with sinew, Plainsmens early thread {a tendon from the back of a deer’s leg}. The colorful sunburst exemplifies the morning star and behind it lies the universe. Four messenger birds encircle the star, which are like angels. (The belief is that large birds such as eagles, cranes etc. carry their prayers) The green background represents the universe and is meant to bring abundance to one’s life. Surrounding the shield are rays from the sun. Here we also find the four colors of the four directions: BLACK is West: WHITE is South: YELLOW is East: RED is North. A soft leather pouch houses some buffalo hair and a tooth. Enveloping two-thirds of this protective medicine shield is a blood-red velvet strip with three panels of ponytrade blue and white beads {very old fashioned beads from the 1830’s to 1840’s}. On the two sides of the tradecloth are white beads individually sewn by hand. Feathers which look like Eagle feathers are actually Canada goose and snow goose feathers. These feathers are encassed in Pendleton blanket strips around the quills and attached by more sinew. The snow goose feathers have the white mottling on them on the lower part of this creation. The feathers and leather pouch are topped by spit-twisted leather strips, eight of which have lovely wind chimes near their ends that will make light noises in a breeze from a fan. Atop the twisted leather strips are antique hawk bells. These are the bells that falconers would tie on to leather jesses around the hawks legs so they would know when their birds returned from hunting. Five smaller feathers attractively hang across the upper left with beeswaxed and dyed red sinew covering the feather quills. These feathers are bound together much like the Peyote style loose drop fans used in ceremonial dances. The shield itself measures over 12” in diameter and from top to bottom is nearly 24”. There is a leather strap on the back for easy hanging. Will ship.
